Many cosy crime readers are surely looking forward to the Netflix adaptation of Richard Osman's bestselling cozy mystery novel about a group of senior sleuths solving mysteries in Cooper's Chase, a posh retirement village in England.
Before the movie's release on August 28, here are a few facts about The Thursday Murder Club.
The Thursday Murder Club was inspired by author Richard Osman's visit to a retirement village
He had the idea while visiting his friend's mother. He spoke about it in an interview with The Sunday Post:
“I spoke to residents and listened to some of the things they’d done in their careers and how much of a laugh they were having living there and I thought, I bet if there was a murder this lot would solve it – or commit it.”
The Thursday Murder Club is told through the perspectives of its four main characters
The book begins with Joyce Meadowcroft, a former nurse and the newest member of The Thursday Murder Club, which was founded by Elizabeth Best, a former spy. Ibrahim Arif, a retired psychiatrist, and Ron Richie, an ex union activist, complete the club. We hear from all of them throughout the book.

The retirement village of Cooper's Chase is set in Fairhaven in Kent, England
Fairhaven is a fictional town set in the scenic county of Kent in South East England. Known for its picturesque scenery, Kent is often referred to as "The Garden of England" and is known for its fruit orchards and hop gardens. Not a bad place to retire (and solve murders).
In the second book, a man from Elizabeth's past needs her help untangling a dangerous web of stolen diamonds, violent mobsters, and a string of murders. She enlists the help of The Thursday Murder Club to find the killer.
How—and who—is the man who died twice? And how does one actually die twice? You'll have to read it to find out.
The fifth installment to the series, The Impossible Fortune, will revolve around a wedding, but we won't say whose, nor will we say much else, in case you haven't caught up to the entire series yet!
The sixth book in The Thursday Murder Club mysteries will be released in 2026.
